Kirsten Serviced Accommodation remembers on ANZAC DAY.
Kirsten Serviced Accommodation has honoured ANZAC Day this year by retelling the story of the 3 Burns brothers of Mudgee who served in WW1 & Norman Pearce of Parkes who also served in WW1 on Facebook. Over 140 families in Mudgee lost a member of their family in the great war. We can only Imagine the affect of the country towns loosing their son’s, husbands & loved ones.
Kirsten Serviced Accommodation in Mudgee remembers the three Burns brothers from the Mudgee Region who fought in WW1. In 1916 Frank Burns aged 23yrs, was a labourer enlisted with his younger brother Ted aged 21yrs a storeman. Then later in 1917 their younger brother Eric aged 21yrs and a farmer also enlisted. Frank was killed in action in Polygon Woods, Ypres, Belgium 13 days after his younger brother Eric enlisted. Frank has no known grave, Eric was wounded and returned to Aust in 1918 while Ted returned in 1919 and later brought out his fiancĂ© to Australia in 1921. Both the surviving brothers Ted & Eric died in the mid 1960’s and are buried in Mudgee Cemetery. (Photos of the Burns brothers from WW1 pictorial roll of NSW).
Kirsten Serviced Accommodation in Parkes remembers Norman Lee Pearce “Gunner” from Parkes who served in WW1. Gunner wrote a diary while at war in which he describes his thoughts & feelings during his time as a soldier. The diary ends with his death aged 25yrs in the battle of Somme in 1916. He is reported to have died in Hospital in France from his wounds in the arm & chest caused by shrapnel. A personal diary is very rare as it was banned. Thus this invaluable diary of Gunner is held by the NSW state Library. Notes digitised on the awm.gov.au website, Gunner is described by his peers as a “tall, fair, well built & sporting young chap” and was often in trouble as he was “easily led by bad companions”. He was reportedly placed in the guard’s room for breaking out of hospital when wounded earlier in his time at war. It sounds like Gunner was a great Australian character. He is buried at “Cough Drop” near Le Grand France.
Lest We forget.
